WHY CHOOSE BAMBOO????
Why Bamboo ?
Bamboo is surely the most wonderful plant – it looks good, pandas will say it tastes good, and it can be processed to create an incredibly soft, smooth and luxurious fibre.
Bamboo is a grass, the same family as the grass of our lawns, growing with the same determination… the more it’s cut… the more it grows… with some species growing up to 30 metres! A truly sustainable fibre, it doesn't need replanting after cutting, it just comes back year after year. Cut a tree and it’s gone – no matter how many FSC certificates it may have.. it’s gone, and it will take a few years for a new one to grow. Whereas certain bamboos grow up to a metre a day!
It needs no fertiliser or pesticides, in fact it even thrives in overgrazed areas and helps to reduce rain run-off, preventing soil erosion. Bamboo releases 35% more oxygen than trees and can reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) by sequestering 12 tons of CO2 per hectare.
The woody stems are pulped to release the stringy fibre from the centre – the bamboo fibres can then be spun into a yarn with wonderful natural characteristics - round, smooth with terrific inherent strength. The unusual round surface of the fibre makes it smooth and comfortable next to the skin, and being a natural fibre it does not irritate like some synthetic fibres.
Facts and Features:
Absorbent.: Much higher than cotton – reportedly 3-4 times more absorbent. It is the high water absorbency rate of the plant that makes it the fastest growing plant in the world. This property remains in the fabric, drawing moisture from the skin and allowing it to evaporate, leaving you naturally drier and more comfortable than other natural materials like cotton.
Breathability and Temperature Control: It is the remarkable natural breathability that also provides it with an inbuilt temperature control. Bamboos are cool to touch in hot weather, a property that it maintains in the form of fabrics that leads the wearing of it to help keep you cool in the heat along with its ventilation and moisture absorption properties.
What is Sisal?
Sisal is a completely natural vegetable fibre, made from the leaves of the agave cactus. The thick leaves are crushed in a mangle, where rollers remove the moist fleshy outer husk, leaving long off-white fibres, which are bundled together then hung in the sun to dry. The thickness and flexibility of the fibre depends upon the particular strain of the plant. Chinese sisal produces a softer fibre which is spun into the coarse yarn, used for knitted and woven exfoliating gloves, mitts, backstraps and softer sisal spa brushes. Alternatively, the Mexican agave cactus produces a much firmer fibre, sometimes known as ‘Mexican Fibre’ which ideal for the stiff bristle needed to stimulate the skin during dry body brushing.
